I3C president and founder Nadezhda Savova attended the Rio+20 UN conference on sustainable development. At Rio +20, in addition to multiple collective bread-making workshops that Nadezhda Savova organized representing the Bread Houses Network's various methods of empowering communities around culinary traditions and commensality, I3C met with Dr. Vandana Shiva - one of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization and a figure of the global solidarity movement known as the alter-globalization movement. Dr. Vandana Shiva and Nadezhda Savova had been discussing for about a year prior to the Rio Forum a possible development of a Bread House within Dr. Shiva's organic farming project and project to save seed varieties.
"Make bread, not war!" is the message of the I3C partner organisation "The World Future Council" with their installation "Bread Tank" at Rio+20. This unique mobile sculpture, measuring 8m x 4m x 3m, is a symbol of how the world's military budget should really be used - to fund sustainable development, fight hunger and extreme poverty, improve food and water security, and provide education and healthcare. Inside the bread tank was a vegetable garden that became visible as the tank was consumed. No bread was wasted: Remaining food was donated to a charitable food bank. The Bread Tank was accompanied by an exhibition that juxtaposes current military spending with money requried to finance exemplary social and ecological measures.
