The First International Summer School on Arts and Sciences for Sustainability in Social Transformation, ASSiST (August 2010, Gabrovo, Bulgaria), www.assist2010.ning.com, was organized by I3C, the International Network Cultura21, www.cultura21.net, and the Latin American Network of Art for Social Transformation (Red Latinoamericana de Arte para la Transformacion Social, RLATS), www.artestransformador.net. This first edition of an annual Global ASSiST Summer School brought together 30 participants from 20 countries and 6 continents, representing three groups of creators: artists, academics/researchers, and cultural practitioners. The Summer School was dedicated to the productive dialogue and mutual teaching/learning processes and elaboration of practical recommendations and methodologies for work (with workshops given by each for the other) among cultural practitioners and scholars engaged in change processes for sustainability. The process would get ramified in a series of new approaches to inspire projects in communities around the world (spread through the community-grounded associated networks of I3C, including RLATS) and would incorporate the best practices and methods into future recommendations to governments, UN agencies, and international and national NGOs to present them with cases and ideas on how the arts can run transversally across distinct spheres of thought and practiceand facilitate communication and creative in various social groups.
